Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health issue worldwide and a major threat to the general population. As a result, many countries in Europe and Asia have adopted TB treatment policies aimed at combating the disease. Despite advances in TB control, the availability of effective treatments remains poor and has been limited. TB is a serious and complex public health issue that cannot be effectively treated with TB drugs, and there are many gaps in TB treatment and management. Thus, this study focuses on developing a novel treatment option for the treatment of TB and its efficacy as a first-line treatment in patients with TB. The current study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of bactrim ds-containing combination therapy for the treatment of TB, and to establish the best dosing regimen for each patient.

Methods

This study was conducted in a tertiary care institution in Europe and Asia, including the foreskin and skin-growth area, and in a second stage in a community-based dermatology clinic in the United Kingdom. The participants were men diagnosed with TB between 2002 and 2005 and were divided into two groups: control group and the treatment group. The clinical features and laboratory tests used were the same in both groups. The treatment regimen was the combination of bactrim and dapsone, with a starting dose of 200 mg/day, and a duration of 12 weeks. The patients in both groups were followed for an average of 12 months (range 3–18 months) after their first treatment. During this period, we recorded changes in the skin and urinary outcomes and the results of blood tests. The safety of the treatment was assessed using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and the Global Bimanual Self-assessment Questionnaire (GBQ).

Results

Of the 30 patients who completed the study, the most common clinical symptoms were pain, itching, fatigue, urination frequency, and a decrease in libido. In the control group, there were no adverse reactions. In the treatment group, the average number of side effects was 2.3, and the most common side effects were headache, nausea, and dyspepsia. Overall, the mean duration of treatment was 12 weeks (range 2–22 weeks), and the overall efficacy was 91.5% in the study group. A total of 7 patients with severe adverse reactions were treated with dapsone (n = 10), followed by the combination of bactrim and dapsone (n = 5).

Conclusion

In conclusion, the current study demonstrates that the dapsone combination for the treatment of TB is effective as a first-line treatment in patients with this condition. The results of this study confirm the efficacy of the combination therapy in the treatment of TB and provide a good alternative to the traditional dosing regimen of bactrim or the traditional regimen of bactrim dapsone. This finding will lead to a better patient-doctor communication and better management of patients with this disease.
